About this condition
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. It causes the characteristic tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers - often worst at night. It's linked to repetitive hand and wrist use, pregnancy, and certain health conditions.
Common symptoms
- Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
- Symptoms worse at night or in the morning
- Weakness when gripping or pinching
- Pain or aching in the wrist and forearm
- Dropping objects due to weakness
