IT Band Syndrome

Outer knee or hip pain common in runners from a tight iliotibial band.

About this condition

IT band syndrome (iliotibial band syndrome) is a common overuse injury in runners and cyclists. The iliotibial band is a thick strip of connective tissue running from the hip to just below the knee. When it becomes tight or overloaded, it causes friction and pain on the outer side of the knee - and sometimes the outer hip.

Common symptoms

  • Sharp or burning pain on the outer knee during running
  • Pain that improves with rest but returns when running resumes
  • Tightness or aching along the outer thigh
  • Tenderness over the outer knee or hip
