Knee Ligament Injury
Sprains or tears of the ACL, MCL, PCL, or other knee ligaments.
About this condition
The knee is stabilised by four major ligaments: the ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL. Ligament injuries range from mild sprains (overstretching) to complete tears, and typically occur from sudden changes of direction, twisting, or direct impact. While severe tears may require surgery, many ligament injuries recover well with expert conservative rehabilitation.
Common symptoms
- Sudden sharp pain at the time of injury
- Swelling, often developing within hours
- Feeling of instability or 'giving way'
- Difficulty bearing weight
- Reduced range of motion
