Runner's Knee
Pain behind or around the kneecap, especially when running, squatting, or going downstairs.
About this condition
Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) is characterised by pain around or behind the kneecap. It's caused by the kneecap tracking incorrectly in its groove - often due to weakness in the hip or quadriceps muscles - creating friction and irritation under the patella.
Common symptoms
- Aching or sharp pain around or behind the kneecap
- Pain that worsens going downstairs or after prolonged sitting
- Pain when squatting, lunging, or kneeling
- A crunching or grinding sensation under the kneecap
