Neck injury from a sudden jolt - most commonly from a car accident.

About this condition

Whiplash occurs when the head is thrown rapidly forward and back (or side to side), straining the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine. It's most often caused by rear-end vehicle collisions but can also follow sports injuries or falls. Symptoms can develop immediately or may take 24–48 hours to appear.

Common symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches starting at the base of the skull
  • Reduced range of movement in the neck
  • Shoulder pain or upper back ache
  • Dizziness or difficulty concentrating
