Sciatica
Pain, tingling, or numbness running from the lower back down one or both legs.
About this condition
Sciatica describes irritation of the sciatic nerve - the longest nerve in the body, running from your lower spine through your buttock and down each leg. It typically causes pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness along this path. It's often caused by a herniated disc, spinal narrowing, or compression of the nerve as it passes through the piriformis muscle in the buttock.
Common symptoms
- Sharp or burning pain from the lower back into the leg
- Tingling or 'pins and needles' in the leg or foot
- Numbness or weakness in the affected leg
- Pain that worsens when sitting
- Difficulty standing up from a seated position
Who should I see?
Our specialists who are best placed to help with sciatica.
Osteopaths are experienced at identifying the precise cause of sciatic irritation and relieving it with targeted manual techniques - including soft tissue work around the piriformis, joint mobilisation, and gentle traction to decompress the nerve.
Book OsteopathyIf the nerve compression is originating from a spinal level (such as a disc pressing on a nerve root), chiropractic care is very effective at reducing that pressure and resolving the associated leg symptoms.
