Herniated / Slipped Disc
A disc bulge pressing on nearby nerves, causing back or leg pain.
About this condition
Between each of your vertebrae sits a cushioning disc. When the soft inner material of a disc pushes out through a weak point in its outer casing, it can press on nearby nerves - causing pain, tingling, or weakness in the back or down the arms or legs. 'Slipped disc' is a common term; the disc doesn't actually slip, but it does bulge or herniate. Most cases resolve well with conservative treatment.
Common symptoms
- Back or neck pain at the affected level
- Pain, tingling, or numbness radiating into an arm or leg
- Weakness in a limb
- Pain that worsens with certain movements
