Upper Back Pain
Pain or stiffness in the thoracic spine, between the shoulder blades.
About this condition
Upper back pain - in the thoracic spine area - is often related to posture, prolonged desk work, or tension accumulating between the shoulder blades. Unlike lower back pain, it's less commonly disc-related and more often due to restricted thoracic joints, muscular tension, or rib joint dysfunction.
Common symptoms
- Aching between or around the shoulder blades
- Stiffness when rotating or extending the upper back
- Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
- Tenderness along the spine
- Occasional sharp pain when breathing deeply

The thoracic spine responds very well to osteopathic treatment. Mobilisation and manipulation of restricted thoracic joints can provide rapid relief and restore normal movement.
Book OsteopathyChronic muscular tension between the shoulder blades is one of the most common presentations in massage therapy. Deep tissue techniques directly address the muscle knots and fascial tightness driving the pain.
