About this condition
Achilles tendinopathy describes a degenerated or overloaded Achilles tendon - the large tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It's common in runners and those who do explosive lower-limb activities. It presents as pain, stiffness, and sometimes a palpable thickening of the tendon, particularly at the back of the heel.
Common symptoms
- Pain and stiffness at the back of the heel, especially in the morning
- Pain that warms up with activity but returns afterwards
- Tenderness directly on the tendon
- Swelling or thickening of the Achilles
- Weakness when rising onto tiptoes
