Frozen Shoulder
Progressive stiffening of the shoulder joint, causing pain and severe loss of movement.
About this condition
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) involves inflammation and thickening of the shoulder joint capsule, which gradually restricts movement. It typically progresses through three phases: a freezing stage (increasing pain), a frozen stage (stiffness), and a thawing stage (gradual recovery). It can last 18 months to 3 years if left untreated - but treatment significantly reduces this timeline.
Common symptoms
- Gradually worsening shoulder pain
- Severe restriction of shoulder movement in all directions
- Difficulty with everyday tasks like dressing or reaching
- Night pain, often waking from sleep
- Muscle wasting in the shoulder over time
