Tears or tendinopathy in the four muscles that stabilise and rotate the shoulder.

About this condition

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the ball of the humerus in the socket and enabling rotation. Injuries range from tendinitis (inflammation) to partial or full tears. They can result from acute trauma, overuse, or natural degeneration with age.

Common symptoms

  • Deep aching pain in the shoulder
  • Weakness when lifting or rotating the arm
  • Pain when raising the arm above shoulder height
  • Night pain when lying on the affected shoulder
  • A clicking or catching sensation
